Use of asbestos in building materials such as roof sheet is banned in many countries, but this is frequently not enforced. However, according to a new report from AllAfrica Global Media, the government in Rwanda is making progressive steps forward. Their goal is to remove the mineral from the nation entirely. These plans to safely banish asbestos could make Rwanda the first African nation to use no materials containing asbestos whatsoever.

Unfortunately, not every country intends to follow in Rwanda’s footsteps in eliminating asbestos, the dangerous cause of life-threatening illnesses like mesothelioma. In Ghana, construction of houses continues to involve the use of roof sheet containing asbestos. When asbestos is handled incorrectly or when its dust particles are accidentally inhaled, it sets the stage for mesothelioma and other deadly diseases, such as lung cancer.

A major issue with the roof sheet in Ghana is that rainfall actually washes the asbestos dust off the roofs and flows into major waterways. This water is then sourced for food preparation, introducing asbestos to the human population. Additionally, when roof sheet becomes old and cracks, previously dormant particles are disrupted and released.

The chances of acquiring mesothelioma from asbestos exposure increase with length of exposure over extended periods of time. This means it is especially harmful to those individuals in the building construction industry. Emmanuel Salu, a director of the Environmental Protection Agency in Ghana, recommends individuals contact a licensed asbestos inspection agency in the event that cracked, chipping or otherwise disturbed roof sheet is detected in the home or workplace.

Nations like Rwanda are setting an example for the rest of the world. Meanwhile, there is a worldwide trend toward increasing diagnosis of mesothelioma and other life-threatening illnesses caused by the various uses of asbestos. Advocating for government-enforced nationwide bans of the mineral is a proactive way to turn this trend around.

If you or someone you care about has been adversely affected by asbestos exposure, you might consider reaching out to a mesothelioma lawyer. Look for one with strong experience and a record of success in mesothelioma litigation, and feel free to simply ask for more information.

Asbestos claims might reach billions of dollars for creditors of the GM bankruptcy estate, according to an article published on Bloomberg Businessweek (see “GM’s Estate May Face Billions in Asbestos Claims” for the original article.) They were granted permission from U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Robert Gerber to seek data from other parties to roughly determine the cost of such claims.

The plan formulated by Motors Liquidation Co., the former portion of General Motors that remains in bankruptcy, involves creating a trust. This trust will allow Motors Liquidation Co. to leave bankruptcy with some funds earmarked for the payment of future tort claims. The estate currently faces around $648 million for asbestos liability and might, down the road, face claims for up to 10 times that much.

Much of this asbestos liability comes from GM’s use of asbestos in their brake linings, something they used to do in the past.

Asbestos settlements are commonly reached because a worker has been exposed to asbestos in the past. Much of this exposure occurs to workers in the shipbuilding and construction industries, both of which (historically) frequently used asbestos for its properties as a flame retardant and insulator. A worker can inhale asbestos by working directly with it or by repairing something that was originally built or manufactured with the mineral.

The potential issues associated with asbestos exposure can be devastating. Once inhaled in the lungs, asbestos fibers remain there because they cannot be broken down by the human body. After a period of latency lasting anywhere from 10 to 50 years, mesothelioma can strike. This cancer, once its symptoms manifest itself, moves incredibly quickly and is highly deadly: After all, though there are treatments for mesothelioma, there is no cure. What’s more, the life expectancy of someone diagnosed with this disease is often measured in months.

If you think you may have suffered from asbestos exposure, you may want to consider contacting a mesothelioma law firm with a historical track record of success with settling asbestos claims.

According to an article on the Mesothelioma News site, there’s a chance that people who have worked long careers in the painting industry might be more susceptible to mesothelioma exposure. The reason for this is due to exposure to certain material central to the painting trade, which include texturing paint, drywall compounds, and block filler, some of which might have contained asbestos. Painters are also often on construction sites, which can be a frequent site of asbestos exposure.

Painters coming in contact with these materials might only have had limited exposure to these materials; nevertheless, even a brief exposure to asbestos fibers that are inhaled might be enough to trigger adverse effects such as mesothelioma and asbestosis down the road.

These links might be somewhat tenuous and are not readily proven; after all, as the article source points out, asbestos can remain latent in the body for so long after initial exposure that it’s difficult to source where the exposure originally came from. Nevertheless, there might be a correlation.

The painting trade is not the first industry to be linked to mesothelioma. The construction and shipbuilding industries are more commonly associated with asbestos exposure. Indeed, one of the more recent articles we referred to in this space was the Fincantieri mesothelioma case, which dealt with a verdict of “negligent homicide” decided against executives of a shipbuilding company in Italy.

There might be other industries affected by mesothelioma, ones whose correlations have yet to be unearthed. Whatever the case, if you’ve been diagnosed with mesothelioma, it might be a good idea to contact a mesothelioma law firm with a long-standing record of experience and success with mesothelioma settlements. Not only can they provide you with information about such cases, but they might also be able to more ably secure an award for the damages caused by the ravages of this devastating disease.

Mesothelioma treatment is a rapidly advancing field. Improvements and promising steps forward are made on a regular basis, as modern science does its best to catch up with this ravaging cancer. Despite what appears to be a constant, if gradual and experimental, march of progress, however, there unfortunately remains no cure for mesothelioma.

Of the three primary methods of treatment for most cancers—surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy—none has proven particularly effective. One of the more effective treatments used by surgeons is a procedure known as a pneumonectomy, which involves intense chemotherapy combined with the removal of a lung. Although this treatment does not typically result in a cure for the patient, it can extend that patient’s life.

Any extension of a mesothelioma victim’s life can be a pretty big deal, especially since the average life expectancy of someone diagnosed with this cancer is less than two years. From the onset of symptoms, the disease moves very rapidly.

Mesothelioma, thankfully, is a very rare disease. Only somewhere between seven and 40 in a 1,000,000 get it in the United States of America, which is a blessedly low rate. However, this low rate of prevalence is yet another reason why it’s so difficult to treat effectively. That’s because there is very little comparative data on mesothelioma out there. There are projects that attempt to compile disease data, like the Cornell University Mesothelioma Program, which works to establish a national registry of all mesothelioma cases, but the sheer lack of victims results in a lack of studies, which, in turn, means fewer big steps forward.

No matter what happens, it might be a good idea to consult with a mesothelioma law firm about securing a mesothelioma settlement. When looking for one, think about the amount of experience that law firm has when dealing with cases of that nature, along with the track record it’s amounted. Gathering those two bits of information will help you make a more well-informed decision, because a mesothelioma lawsuit or settlement is not something that can easily be taken lightly.

Sad news out of Kalamazoo, Michigan: Mlive.com reports that four-term Kalamazoo County commissioner, 69-year-old Grady Biby, recently passed away from mesothelioma. Last July, Mr. Biby announced to his fellow commissioners that he’d be leaving to battle the mesothelioma, but he was never able to return to work.

According to the article, Biby attributed his mesothelioma to the years he was aboard Navy submarines — the submarines probably exposed him to asbestos, which is the overwhelming cause of mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer also called “asbestos cancer.” It attacks the lining of various body organs, and though there are treatments for it, there is no cure. Mesothelioma symptoms can take years or even decades to appear in a person, which is why it’s common for people to not realize their job in the construction industry or ship building industry — two of several industries that worked with asbestos — is the reason for their illness.

Families of people who worked in industries affected by asbestos could also be at risk. Workers who unknowingly tracked home asbestos fibers on their clothing and shoes had no idea they’d be putting their loved ones in danger.

Medical bills can pile up for a mesothelioma victim, and the pain and suffering are tremendous. If someone suffered or is suffering from mesothelioma because of asbestos exposure or another person’s or company’s neglect, it’s important to seek the help of a qualified mesothelioma lawyer.

A good mesothelioma lawyer will be experienced in handling similar cases and settlements. And while a common belief is that a lawyer is too expensive to hire, it’s important to remember that mesothelioma lawyers typically work on a contingency fee basis, meaning any money they receive must come from the mesothelioma settlement, or the verdict obtained in the case.

You don’t typically hear about mesothelioma without hearing something about asbestos or asbestos exposure. The reason for that is because mesothelioma is overwhelmingly caused by asbestos exposure. A rare form of cancer often called “asbestos cancer,” mesothelioma does not have a cure. Once diagnosed, victims usually do not have much time left. Medical bills can pile up, and families can be left devastated.

Mesothelioma affects the pleura membrane surrounding the lungs or the lining of the abdomen, attacking the lining of the lungs, heart and abdomen. People who worked at jobs where they were exposed to asbestos likely had no idea of the danger they were in at the time. Some industries affected include the construction and ship building industries. Additionally, the family members of workers may have been put at risk for mesothelioma. Workers exposed to asbestos could have tracked the fibers into their homes with their shoes and clothing.

Three seriously medical conditions associated with asbestos include: asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma.

Many mesothelioma victims fail to realize that their former occupation explains their illness because it can take years or even decades after asbestos exposure for the condition to manifest. Victims must fight for their rights. If you or a loved one have mesothelioma, contact an attorney to find out what steps to take next. A good mesothelioma attorney will fight for the compensation you deserve.

Mesothelioma settlements can range anywhere from thousands of dollars to millions of dollars, and they’re important to know about because it’s rare that a lawsuit involving asbestos exposure and mesothelioma makes it to trial. The avenue of exposure and political climate in the region at the time can both be influential when it comes to mesothelioma settlements. The damage done to the victim as a result of asbestos exposure, the culpability of the defendant and the factors listed above are ultimately what the amount the mesothelioma settlement is dependent on. With mesothelioma settlements, all parties involved are able to avoid protracted legal battles.

What do Mesothelioma Settlements Account for?

Lost wages, pain and suffering and the cost of long-term medical treatment are all things that mesothelioma settlements must account for. And if mesothelioma resulted in a wrongful death, the settlement then must account for the deceased’s survivors’ pain and suffering, plus the funeral expenses.

What is Mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer. Typically caused by asbestos exposure, mesothelioma does not have a cure. Asbestos is a naturally occurring fiber that, for decades, was used in the construction, shipbuilding and automotive industries. Since it can take decades after asbestos exposure for mesothelioma symptoms to become noticeable, many people fail to realize that asbestos exposure is the cause of their illness.

A deadly disease, mesothelioma develops very quickly — the life expectancy of a patient is typically just months. It is very important to diagnose mesothelioma as early as possible in order to maintain a relatively high quality of life.

Questions About Mesothelioma Settlements

If you or a loved one have suffered asbestos exposure, don’t hesitate to contact a lawyer for help. If you have questions about mesothelioma settlements, please call 1-888-370-0121 to speak with a resource professional.

A Mesothelioma diagnosis is made by a doctor. Mesothelioma symptoms can vary depending on the person affected and how severe the illness is. Symptoms can include having a hard time breathing and/or swallowing, a loss of appetite and chest pain, for example. If you believe you have Mesothelioma or if you were exposed to asbestos, it may be ideal to visit a doctor.

How a Mesothelioma Diagnosis is Determined

There are several methods doctors will use to make a Mesothelioma diagnosis. A physical exam is usually the first step, and the doctor will want to ask questions regarding your medical and family history. MRIs and CT Scans may be used, as they can possibly show the fluid collection between the lung and chest wall that sometimes appears as a result of Mesothelioma, thus giving the indication that a person has it. A tissue biopsy can also be used for a Mesothelioma diagnosis.

These are merely examples — you will want to ask your doctor how your Mesothelioma diagnosis was made. You may also want to ask your doctor about how accurate the method of making your diagnosis was, and if it wasn’t thought to be highly accurate, if there’s another type of test you could undergo. If you aren’t happy with your doctor’s response, you may consider getting a second opinion.

Treatment After a Mesothelioma Diagnosis

If you have been diagnosed with Mesothelioma, you were likely referred to an oncologist or Mesothelioma specialist doctor for treatment. Though there is no proven cure for Mesothelioma, treatment is available. Around the country, doctors are experimenting with different kinds of treatments, one of them being pneumonectomy. This involves the surgical removal of a lung as well as intensive chemotherapy. This treatment might extend the life of a person who has Mesothelioma.

Long-term survival of Mesothelioma is very rare, and victims have a life expectancy of less than two years from the onset of symptoms. Sadly, it’s not unusual for a person to die just months after a Mesothelioma diagnosis.

When a person who has suffered as a result of asbestos exposure files a lawsuit, Mesothelioma settlements can be offered. A rare form of cancer, Mesothelioma attacks the lining of various organs and areas of the body such as the lungs, heart and abdomen. Because asbestos exposure is the overwhelming cause of Mesothelioma in the United States, it’s often called “asbestos cancer.” There is no proven cure for Mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma Cases Don’t Always Go to Trial

Mesothelioma lawsuits, like most personal injury lawsuits, can end in a settlement instead of a judge or jury verdict. A Mesothelioma settlement is a contract between the two parties in which the Mesothelioma plaintiff and the defendant agree to dismiss the charges in exchange for a payment, usually to the plaintiff.

Mesothelioma settlements typically involve a very long process when the case goes to trial, as the courts determine the settlements. But Mesothelioma cases don’t always go to trial: Time and money can be saved when Mesothelioma settlements are successfully negotiated with the defendants, which happens before the case goes to trial. Sometimes a defendant will want to settle when they are not confident they’ll win the case.

Mesothelioma Settlements: How Much?

There’s no way to tell how much the amount of Mesothelioma settlements will be, as previous Mesothelioma settlement amounts have ranged by quite a bit. Mesothelioma settlement amounts can depend on several factors, like the severity of the defendant’s negligence and the victim’s hospital bills and emotional suffering, for example.

Mesothelioma Settlements and Your Lawyer

A qualified lawyer can help with Mesothelioma settlements. When the negotiation process is happening, you’ll want an experienced Mesothelioma lawyer on your side who will know the proper way to settle so that you get the compensation you deserve.

If you or a loved one suffered as a result of asbestos exposure and would like more information about Mesothelioma settlements, don’t hesitate to contact a lawyer today to find out what can be done next.
